Off Topic For A Good Cause

Every spring for the past 5 years, except last year because I missed it, my dog Igloo and I have participated in the Pet Parade to benefit the Atlanta Humane Society. The Pet Parade is a 1 mile fun walk that raises money for the Atlanta Humane Society. Igloo and I will once again be walking for the AHS on Saturday, May 1, 2010.


Igloo is a Pet Parade Veteran!


The AHS is the oldest private charitable organization in Atlanta, founded in 1873 following a visit to the city by Robert E. Lee. The animal charity was originally chartered to protect women, children, and animals and remained a child protection and animal welfare society for 79 years. The Shelter, now a widely recognized pet adoption center, clinic, and educational program provider, was originally located on Marietta Street and moved to its present location at 981 Howell Mill Road in the 1930s. AHS does not euthanize for time or space. That last part is extremely important to me.


In addition to adoption services, the Atlanta Humane Society has a variety of other programs including:
* Pet Training
* Pet Boutique
* Grief Therapy for pet loss
* Pet Therapy where pets visit nursing homes and children's hospitals to brighten the day of someone.
They also run a low cost Vet's office that offers the community low cost vet services based on their income.


I have directly benefited from the AHS because that's where I got Igloo!



Igloo was a victim of Hurricane Ivan. He was found wandering the streets as a stray. When the storm came ashore, he along with many other homeless pets on the gulf coast were shipped to Atlanta. I originally fostered him. That was 5 1/2 years ago, so you see how that worked out lol.



We can tie this in to hockey. With a name like Igloo, you'd think he would be a Pens fan, right? Nope, he's a Wings fan. I think his toy, Octi has corrupted him.
