Thrashers Year Book: Slava Kozlov

This week we take a look at a Thrasher who will not be with us next season, Slava Kozlov. Slava struggled this season and had some differences with Coach Anderson who benched him for quite a few games. In the 4 previous seasons he played every game but ONE. This season (2009-10) he only played in 55. Though he struggled, I like to think of him as he was with the Little White Russian line. You have to respect the Slava! Two Stanley Cups, come on!

Slava at the fan face off.

Casino night Slava.

One of the last pictures I took of Slava. This is the "Shirt off of our back" at the last game of the season.

Slava in warm ups.

Sharing some words with Hainsey at the last game.

Taking it to the net to try and get one by Cam Ward.

Slava says it's Miller Time!

Do not push the Slava around!

Slava and his future teammate, Clark MacArthur watching the action.

In front of Boston's net.

Slava and his Russian buddy, Max Afinogenov, in practice.

The shoot out, one of Slava's specialties. Slava in a shoot out is like money in the bank (usually). Unfortunately this one didn't go in.

This one did, though!

Me and my friend Slava hanging out at a gas station.

Slava keeping an eye on the puck and Klesla.

Woo Hoo! Slava scores.

The only thing Slava likes better than scoring...WINNING!

Who says Slava doesn't smile????

Good luck Slava, where ever you may end up! I will always be proud of my Kozlov jersey.

A Behemoth Descends Upon Atlanta

Today was the first day fans got to see the Artyukinasaurus Rex, Evgeny Artyukin. Wow he's a big boy. At 6'5'' and 250lbs, you can't miss him on the ice.

They had him on a line with Peverley and Max. I knew he was fast, but wow. He could totally keep up with Max. You aren't expecting speed from something that large.

My husband pointed out that he wasn't much of a finisher, but if he's that large and that fast, if he can get the puck to Pevs or Max...look out! I'm hoping to see his large ass in front of the net! I'd love to see him be our version of Dustin Byfuglien (Chicago) or Tomas Holmstrom (Detroit)

Also at practice were both Colby Armstrong and Slava Kozlov, both of whom were said to be on the "trading block." Slava asked to be moved, but as of the close of the deadline, no one was interested. Looks like Slava will stay here for at least a little while.

Another epic win at practice...I got my Oduya jersey signed...Oh did I???

The Best Part Of Waking Up Is Thrashers In Your Cup

Someone lit a fire under the Thrashers marketing department's ass (yes we actually have one apparently) for this "March to the Playoffs" promotion. Monday morning from 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. various players were at different locations of am/pm. For those that don't know what that is, it is the inside food/beverage store found at many BP gas stations.

I had planned on going to practice anyway, but I was super lucky because one of the participating am/pm's was 1/2 mile down the road from where I live. Sweet! At my location was Slava Kozlov, Christoph Schubert, Nik Antropov, and assistant coach Steve Weeks.

My husband and Schubie chatted about soccer and the German Olympic hockey team.

They had several guys and gals there with the guys who were working they promotion. They were fabulous. A promotion guy, Slava and Nik were giving my husband a hard time for wearing an Avalanche hat. Then I busted him out and told them that it was because he got it on clearance.

I told Nik that I played black jack with him at Casino Night this year and that he was a great dealer.

My husband, who is from Connecticut, chatted with Steve Weeks a long time about Connecticut and the Whalers.

What a fun event. I really enjoyed having a bit of one-on-one time to chat with the guys and joke around. Great idea, Thrashers! Oh, and who knew, am/pm has kick-ass coffee!

Here is a video of the event. We got to the location after the cameras had left.

Focus on a Thrasher: Slava Kozlov

Slava has the nickname "The Professor" on the Thrashers webboard. I'm guessing because he schools everyone. Plus, his stoic nature is kind of perfect for the moniker. Slava hit kind of a slump in the 2007-08 seaon, then it was learned he was playing through an injury. Last season, he came back with a vengeance.

Vyacheslav Anatolevich Kozlov (Вячеслав Анатольевич Козлов) was born on May 3, 1972 (I'm 3 days older than Slava) in Voskresensk, U.S.S.R.

In 1987, Slava began his professional career with the Khimik Voskresensk (now known as the Atlant Moscow Blast). Slava played with Khimik for 4 season.

Slava was drafted in the 3rd round (45th overall) by the Detroit Red Wings in the 1990 NHL Entry Draft.

Slava started the 1991-92 season with the HC CSKA Moscow, but ended up in Detroit. On March 12, 1992, Slava made his NHL debut with Detroit against the St. Louis Blues. He scored his first-career point with an assist.

The 1992-93 season saw Slava spend most of his season with the Adirondack Red Wings. Slava did get called up to Detroit for 17 games that season though. On October 8, Slava scored his first NHL point against Los Angeles.

Slava spent most of the 1993-94 season with the Detroit Red Wings. He set a career-high with 73 points in 77 games (with the Wings). Slava got his first hat trick on January 16 in San Jose. He also recorded a career-high eight game point streak from 11/20-12/3.

The 1994-95 season was shortened by a lockout of the players by the owners. Slava appeared in 46 games with the Red Wings, but also appeared in 10 games and recorded 7 points for the CSKA Moscow in the Russian Super League.

For the 1995-96 Season, Slava got a new friend to play with, Igor Larionov. After Igor was acquired, Coach Scotty Bowman created a 5-man Russian unit called "The Russian Five." It consisted of Slava, Igor, Vladimir Konstantinov, Sergei Federov and Vladimir Fetisov. Specializing in speed and puck control, the Russian Five were noted for their skill and ability on the ice.

The 1996-97 season turned out to be a very good season for the Detroit Red Wings thanks to Slava and his Russian buddies. Thanks to the Russian Five, the Wings went to the Stanley Cup Finals and swept Philadelphia in 4 games. During the playoffs, the Red Wings went 16-0 when any of the Russians scored a point and 0-4 when they did not.

The Russian Five lost one of their members shortly after they won the cup. Vladimir Konstantinov was in a devastating car accident that would end his career. The team wore special patches in the 1997-98 season that said "believe" in both Russian and English. Slava was able to have a good season, putting up 52 points. He helped the Wings win the playoffs for back-to-back Stanley Cups.

Slava played with the Red Wings until the summer of 2001 when he was traded to Buffalo in exchange for Dominik Hasek. The season wasn't good for Slava and was shortened by injury. There are also some stories that he wasn't very happy there. Whatever the reason, Slava was traded to The Atlanta Thrashers (a/k/a he came home!)

Slava hit the ground running with the Thrashers. In the 2002-03 season, Slava put up 70 points. On March 31, Slava recorded his 500th NHL point. He ended the season on a six-game assist/point streak setting a career-high and tying a team-record for the longest assist streak.

Slava kept up the good work in the 2003-04 season with 52 points in 76 games. He became the 7th Russian-born player ot record eight 20 goal seasons in his career. He finished second on the team in goals and fourth in assists.

The 2004-05 season was the long, horrible, miserable lock out. Slava split his season between Voskresensk and Ak Bars Kazan of the Russian Super League. He earned 36 points in 46 games. He earned 8 points in an 8 game stretch.

With the lock out over, Slava came back to the Thrashers and for the next two seasons, put up his usual steady numbers, scoring 71 points in the 2005-06 season and a career high 80 points in 2006-07. On March 12, 2007, Slava recorded his 700th career NHL point and 300th goal. He collected his 400th NHL assist on March 8. With the inception of the Shootout in the NHL Slava has proven to be one of the league's best scorer in the shootouts . Slava is money in the bank on a shoot out!

The 2007-08 season was an off season for Slava. Though he played in all 82 games, he only put up 41 points. The last time he put up those kinds of numbers, he got traded to Buffalo (eww). The team stuck with him though. It was later learned that he had been playing in quite a bit of pain. He had surgery in the summer of 2007 and was still recovering.

Slava answered the critics in the 2008-09 season. Spending time on the Little White Russian line (with Bryan Little and Todd White) certainly helped. Slava was back to his old point scoring self playing in all 82 games and scoring 76 points.

Slava is also apparently a gym rat. They say he is stronger now than when he broke into the league almost 20 years ago. He's not as fast as he used to be, but he has found ways to compensate. Instead of relying on his speed, he is more of a "follow in behind the play, set everything in motion and follow in" kind of guy.
Todd White says:

“Being on the ice with him, he slows the play down when play gets scrambled out there and we start running around a little bit.”

Bryan Little said:
“He’s great at controlling the puck and settling things down, not panicking with the puck.”

Slava has words of wisdom, too:

"I feel pretty good, but the years take your speed away," he said. "I don't think I'm fast like I used to be, but in this game, you can use partners and you can compensate your speed with experience and playing a little different role."

Slava has plenty of gas left in the tank!

Hockey Players Stripping!

That got your attention (one way or the other)! Final game of the 2008-09 season. Thrashers vs. Lightning.

What a wonderful season it's been. Well, let me explain...the Thrashers haven't had exactly a wonderful season, but I've had so much fun going to all of the games, making new friends and enjoying this sport that it's been wonderful for me.

I've been a Thrashers fan for a while but because my husband works odd hours, I didn't get to go to as many games as I'd like. When I met Shauna at work a little over 2 years ago...problem solved! A rabid hockey nut that was free to go to games.

We've had a blast this season. So sad it's over :(

So the Lightening stormed (hehe) into town for our final game of the season. The arena was full (WOW) and times were good.

Warm ups!

I had a very special sign for Moose for the final warm up. Moose is such a hard worker and such a good team player, I wanted him to know how much he was appreciated. My sign says "Thank you very much" and has a little Moose relaxing with a drink.

I even made sure his little margarita had salt on the rim

I also had a sign telling them to bring Stuie back.

Here are my signs in action! Thanks to Mr. Fred I have a picture of me, my sign and my Moose!

Colby and some guy laughing and having a good time....hey wait that's Slava! Who knew he could smile???

My Moose, how I will miss you.

Kari warming up. Good to see him in the nets again.

Hey Bobo!

Our Little superstar.

Kari smiling like he just sugared your gas tank.

Moose in the usual spot.

Well Toby, I didn't know you cared! I didn't think you liked me "like that."

Stuie! I so hope he's back on the roster next season.

Smile Moose, smile.

Oh Toby, what are you warming up by shooting for? Everyone knows Toby NEVER shoots it.

Oh Slava, what's wrong with the stick, buddy? Enstrom still can't take his eyes off of me. Is my fly open?

Slater skating with his hair blowing in the wind.

Awwww, what are these Finnish babies talking about?
Ramo: Päivää
Kari: Päivää
Ramo: Kuinka voit?
Kari: I am pretty good, glad to be back in the game. Glad this season is over.
Ramo: Yeah, I don't blame you, your team sucks.
Kari: Dude, you play for the Lightning.

Kaptain Kovalchuk

Colby and Pevs chatting.

Boultsie and Stuie

Bobo and Bogo

Every time the Lightning come to town, The Heatmeiser is waiting for them with a funny St. Louie sign. They say the midget gets mad and the team mates laugh. Again, 5'9'' my ass.

Moose striking a majestic pose.

Hainsey has quite a female following. I'm sure his Hollywood good looks have something to do with that. I love the chick blowing him a kiss in the background.

On to the game!

Sorry it's backwards, but oh well. Congratulations to Colby Armstrong for winning the Dan Snyder award. I tear up every year for this. Seeing is funny, sweet smiling face makes me think what we lost when Dan died. I'm constantly in amazement at the forgiveness of his family and how they work to truely turn Dan's memory into something possitive. Army deserves it.

We started out in 216, seat B. Good for pictures, you were above the glass and could see the action. Opening face off.

The Lightning making Kari do some work.

Kari making a save.

Fight! Apparently Konopka was talking some shit to Boultsie and Boultsie had to straighten him out. Boultsie won!

Not to be out done, Thorburn decides to take on....holy shit, that's ARTYUKHIN. Don't do it Chris! Arty handed Thor his ass.

Boultsie: Dude, wtf were you doing??
Thor: I wanted to fight, too!
Boultsie: That was freaking Artyukhin, are you nuts?
Thor: I did okay.
Boultsie: He totally kicked your ass.

Bogo wanted to dance, too. He did a good job against Pettinger. Two out of three ain't bad!

WTF???? Why is there a puppet at the hockey game? It wasn't part of the show either, some fan brought it.

Second period we notice our friend David sitting 3 rows from the glass under us. We him asked if anyone was by him and there wasn't so we went on down.

Action shot from the new seats!

I was on the row that was right by the Tampa Bay bench so I got good shots of the back-up(back-up) goalie, Karri Ramo. Don't get too comfortable, Karri. You'll be warming up soon

A shot of the tank, Artyukhin. Shauna a/k/a Mother Russia was going nuts.

Poor McKenna, he was NOT having a good night.

McKenna has had an NHL baptism by fire this year. I think he's played well considering he's been mostly AHL and ECHL and now suddenly he's facing the likes of Ovechkin, Malkin, Crosby, Kolvachuk and Staal on a night basis. Plus he's brought good looks to the Tampa goalies.

Ilya and Bochenski waiting for the face off.

Well, poor McKenna got pulled after letting 3 in. Welcome to the game, Karri Ramo!

Ramo tracking the puck.

Poor McKenna. Getting pulled wasn't bad enough he got constantly heckled while on the bench. Some super loud guy a few rows back was constantly yelling:
"McKenna you suck."
"Don't worry McKenna, it's not your fault."
"Your walking home, McKenna."
"Even your mom hates you McKenna."
I guess it's because I'm such a goalie homer but I couldn't take it any more. I yelled "LEAVE MCKENNA ALONE!" (Maybe I should make a video like this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2qOW__TneAY )

I love a good heckle, but come on. He kept yelling. And I yelled (as I was sitting right by McKenna at the time)"kick his ass, McKenna." I'm sure he appreciated being defended by a girl.
LEAVE MCKENNA ALONE! I mean it.

A shot of Ramo's yucky brains mask.

Ramo seeing more action.

Some action up close.

Thrashers win 7-2!! It's our last game of the season so it's time for the 7th man award and the "Shirts off of our back" promotion. The 7th man is an award given to a super fan. It's chosen by people writing in and nominating someone and the committe choosing you. The 7th man gets first choice of who they want a jersey from. As usual, 7th man chose Ilya.

The shirts off of our backs is a contest where season ticket holders are randomly selected to receive a players game worn jersey. They don't get to choose who they want.

I didn't have a very good view of Moose taking off the jersey, but I got before and after.
*SWOON*

I love burst mode! He and Thrash look like they are having serious discussions. The last picture is funny, he's looking right at me. Maybe he's thinking "I thought I had a restraining order against her."

Take it off, Stuie!

Go Bobo Go!

Boultsie is such a nice guy.

That's quite a line up! Moose, Ex, Bogo, Hainsey and Oysters.

Ex is showing a little skin!

Kari showing us what is exactly under his jersey.

Thrashers win, there are no more games....GUEST AT THE POST GAME!
We had the ultimate guest, Coach John Anderson.

Drink up coach! You deserve it! I've seen a few games where I wouldn't blame you if you pulled out a crack pipe.

Best part of the night, I know the guy who got the Moose jersey. Jamey was excited when they called him and told him he would be receiving a jersey that night, but he didn't know whose he would get. He was super excited to learn he got the Moose's jersey! He said when he got it, he couldn't wait to show it to me. Isn't that sweet. He let me hold it, smell it and snuggle it. It actually smelled SOOO good, Moose didn't play in it.
So that's right...THIS jersey
Is the one in my very hands. *SWOON*
What a way to end the season!
